Specials fares: the Carta Blu
To be able to use the special fares reserved for disabled passengers it is necessary
to have a Carta Blu which allows the purchase of one ordinary ticket to be valid
for two people, excluding any supplementary costs (couchette, sleeping-car).
The Carta Blu is a nominative railcard which costs Euro 5,00 and is valid for
5 years. A disabled person living in Italy and recipient of an escort allowance
(certified by an appropriate certificate from the ASL- public healthcare department)
can apply for a Carta Blu by delivering copies of the relevant documentation
to the Reception Centre for Disabled People or to the ticket office. The Carta
Blu is only valid on national rail lines and for reclining arm-chair accommodation
on FS (State Railway) ferry services to and from Sardinia.
Assistance Centres for Disabled People
Disabled passengers may use assistance services available at the stations when
arriving or leaving (being escorted to the train, getting on and off the carriages,
request for meal services on board, seat bookings): it is necessary to inform
personnel 24 hours before departure, by phoning the Assistance Centre (from
8.00am to 8.00pm) at the departure or arrival station, indicating also whether
you intend to use a wheel-chair made freely available by the Railways or a private
one.
Assistance services for international trips must be requested 3 working days
in advance, directly at the departure station. The passenger must arrive at
the station 45 minutes before the departure of the train. There are, currently,
about 180 stations with Assistance Centres for Disabled People.
A magazine entitled "I servizi per la clientela disabile" ("Services
for Disabled Clients") contains useful information for disabled travellers
including a list of all the Assistance Centres. The magazine is available from
the Assistance Centres or from the Information Office at the main stations.
It is published in both Italian and English.
Some medium and long-distance trains have carriages equipped for passengers
with mobility disabilities.
Home delivery of tickets is available: it is necessary to phone 24 hours before
departure (tel: 02-66981013) to book tickets on Eurostar trains, and 48 hours
before departure (tel: 02-67070958) to book tickets on all other trains.
Transport from home to the station and vice versa is available (on payment) in Milan for passengers using Eurostar Italia trains.
